Supporting Growth, Confidence and Wellbeing Through Equine-Assisted Psychology

Led by a registered educational psychologist and equine specialist, our  tailored therapeutic programme, consists of un-mounted (ground-based) and mounted (riding) experiences depending on the goals and needs of each individual. We aim to support each person's unique journey so positive progress can be made.

All while taking place in Equicare’s tranquil Ohāriu Valley setting.

Led by a Registered Educational Psychologist

Equicare Psychology is led in partnership by Jess Sutherland, a registered Educational Psychologist with experience supporting young people, adults and whānau across education and disability services.

How it works

1. Meet and Greet

Our journey begins with a warm and welcoming meet and greet session. This initial meeting allows us to get to know each person and understand their unique needs and goals. It's an opportunity for all parties to ask questions and learn more about our approach.

2. Weekly Plan

An assessment is carried out after the initial meet and greet by our psychologist, this may involve conversations with whānau, kura, government and non-government agencies to help individualise sessions so we can support unmet underlying needs. A holistic or ecological approach, where whanau and other supports (such as kura) are encouraged to be a part of the process so new skills can be transferred and generalised to other environments. From there a plan is created and implemented.

3. Start of Journey

With the plan in place, we embark on the care journey. Each session is designed to foster growth, healing, and connection alongside our horses.  Each individual will engage in therapeutic activities that promote mental and emotional well-being, all within the serene and supportive environment of our farm.

Our mission

Our mission is to provide high-quality equine-assisted therapy to uplift individuals by building connections between horses and humans. We are dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and compassionate space where children can connect with horses, build confidence, and develop essential life skills.
